The Donaldsonville City Council approved a contract for Juanita Pearley to serve as the assistant to the executive director of the Donaldsonville Downtown Development District.

Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Juanita Pearley and Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan welcome everyone to the 2023 Donaldsonville Independence Day celebration held July 3 at Crescent Park.

Members unanimously approved the contract during the March 26 meeting at city hall.

Pearley has been active in the city's DDD for many years and has served as the Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce executive director.

The DDD has planned several events through the years to spark activity in the historic downtown area of the city, such as the annual downtown Christmas celebrations.

This year, the DDD has planned events for the first Saturday of April, May and June, as well as the annual July 3 fireworks celebration at Crescent Park.

Leading off the slate, the first annual Gospelfest has been set for 6 to 9 p.m. April 6 at the downtown park.

In another matter during the meeting, Mayor Leroy Sullivan reported Entergy has been identifying street lights in need of repair in the city and in other areas around the Ascension Parish west side.

Also of note, the Miss Donaldsonville Scholarship Pageant has been slated for June 28.

The deadline to apply is April 30.
